My Favorite Recent Reads

I love to read. Big surprise, I know. I’m always on the lookout for a new book I think I’m might enjoy, and lately I’ve found quite a few that I thought I would share. So if you see any that look interesting, check it out. You may like it. If you do find a book you enjoy as much I did, let me know!

Go and Come Back by Joan Abalone

This story written from the perspective of a teenage girl from a small tribe in Peru reminded me a lot of Island of the Dolphins and Sing Down the Moon, two books I loved in middle school. I appreciated the exposure to a different culture and enjoyed the examination of life from a worldview different than my own.

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

I love musicals, and the Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorites (judge me if you will). But after reading the book, I have to say I like the book better. It differs from the musical/movie in many ways, but I think those differences make the story even better.

The King of Attolia (The Queen’s Thief #3) by Megan Whalen Turner

I was not sure what to expect from this book, and I realized pretty early into it that I’d made a serious mistake breaking one of my cardinal rules of book reading— never start a story with anything but the first book in a series. It took me a while to catch on with everything I missed, but the more I read, the more I was drawn into the story. I’ll definitely be going back to read the first two books.

Push Not the River (The Poland Trilogy #1) by James Conroyd Martin

Poland is the setting for this story about a young woman’s rapidly changing life in the late eighteenth century. The story offers much more excitement than I anticipated, and it is made even more interesting by the fact that it is based on the journals of an actual Polish countess.

Third Daughter (The Royals of Dharia #1) by Susan Kaye Quinn

This steampunk fantasy is the first of a trilogy. I haven’t read the rest yet, but I’m hoping they’re as much fun as the first one. I also enjoyed the setting, which is a fictional land inspired by India.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I loved pretty much everything about The Lunar Chronicles series. Its hard to go wrong with a reworking of classic fairy tales set in a futuristic sci-fi universe. My nerdy heart drank it up. The ethnic diversity of the characters was also a big plus. When it was over, I wished it wasn’t.

What do you think? Does anything look interesting? Let me know if you pick any of these up, and if you find something else you enjoy, feel free to share!
